Claude for Developers

Claude isn't just an AI assistant - it's a tireless pair programmer that's read more code than any human ever will. Here's how to integrate it into your development workflow.

Code Review

Claude excels at catching issues humans miss. Feed it your code and ask for a review:

# Ask Claude to review this function
def calculate_discount(price, customer_type, quantity):
    if customer_type == "premium":
        discount = 0.2
    elif customer_type == "regular":
        discount = 0.1
    else:
        discount = 0

    if quantity > 100:
        discount += 0.05

    return price * (1 - discount)

Claude will identify edge cases (negative prices? None values?), suggest type hints, and recommend error handling patterns.

Debugging

When you're stuck on a bug, Claude is your best debugging partner:

I'm getting this error in my React app:
"Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'map')"

Here's my component: [paste code]
Here's the API response shape: [paste example]

The error happens when I navigate to the page directly
but not when I click through from the homepage.

The Debugging Framework

  1. Share the error message exactly
  2. Provide the relevant code
  3. Describe the expected behavior
  4. Explain when it happens and when it doesn't
  5. Mention what you've already tried

Documentation

Claude writes excellent documentation. Use it to generate:

  • README files from your codebase
  • API documentation from your endpoints
  • JSDoc/docstring comments for your functions
  • Architecture decision records (ADRs)
  • Onboarding guides for new team members
Write comprehensive JSDoc documentation for this TypeScript function.
Include parameter descriptions, return type, example usage,
and potential exceptions.

API Integration

Claude's API lets you build AI-powered features directly into your applications:

import Anthropic from '@anthropic-ai/sdk';

const anthropic = new Anthropic({
  apiKey: process.env.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY,
});

async function analyzeCode(code: string) {
  const message = await anthropic.messages.create({
    model: 'claude-sonnet-4-20250514',
    max_tokens: 1024,
    messages: [
      {
        role: 'user',
        content: `Review this code for bugs and improvements:\n\n${code}`,
      },
    ],
  });

  return message.content[0].text;
}

Testing

Claude can generate comprehensive test suites:

Write unit tests for this function using Jest.
Cover these cases:
- Normal inputs
- Edge cases (empty arrays, null values)
- Error conditions
- Boundary values

Use descriptive test names that explain the expected behavior.

Git Commit Messages

Stop writing vague commit messages. Ask Claude:

Write a conventional commit message for these changes:
- Added user authentication middleware
- Created login and signup API endpoints
- Added JWT token generation
- Updated user model with password hashing

Output: feat(auth): implement JWT-based authentication with login/signup endpoints

Best Practices

  1. Always review generated code - Claude is good, not infallible
  2. Provide context - share your tech stack, coding standards, and constraints
  3. Ask for explanations - understand why, not just what
  4. Test everything - AI-generated code needs the same rigor as human code
  5. Use it iteratively - start with a scaffold, then refine

Claude won't replace developers - but developers who use Claude will replace those who don't.
