Creative Writing with Claude

Claude isn't just a productivity tool - it's a creative collaborator that can help you build worlds, craft characters, and find the perfect word when your mind goes blank.

World-Building

Give Claude the seeds of your world and let it help you grow them:

I'm building a fantasy world where magic is powered by music.
Help me develop:
- The magic system's rules and limitations
- How this affects the society's structure
- Three distinct cultures with different musical traditions
- Potential conflicts that arise from this system

Character Development

I have a character: a retired detective who now runs a bookshop.
Help me flesh them out:
- What drove them from detective work?
- What unconscious habits from their old career show up?
- What's their relationship with their regular customers?
- What secret are they keeping?
Give me specific details, not generalities.

Dialogue

Claude is excellent at writing natural dialogue. The key is providing voice references:

Write a dialogue between:
- Character A: Sarcastic, intelligent, hides vulnerability behind humor
- Character B: Earnest, patient, sees through A's defenses
Setting: They're stuck in an elevator.
Topic: A needs to apologize for something but can't bring themselves to.

Poetry

Write a poem about the moment between sleeping and waking.
Style: Free verse, contemporary.
Tone: Meditative, slightly melancholic.
Length: 12-16 lines.
Use concrete imagery, not abstractions.

The Creative Partner Workflow

  1. You provide the vision - the idea, the emotion, the purpose
  2. Claude provides the variations - options, alternatives, expansions
  3. You curate - select what resonates, discard what doesn't
  4. Claude refines - polishes your selections
  5. You own the result - your creative judgment shapes the final work

AI doesn't replace creativity - it removes the friction that keeps creativity from flowing.
